YOUTH LEADERSHIP DOUGLAS
YLD is a leadership training program grounded in community awareness, community service, and developing your personal potential to lead. Participants will acquire and broaden their knowledge of local government, business, and civic activities through this leadership program.
YLD is highly interactive, which permits participants to review the impact each topic has on them as well as on the larger community.
YLD goals are: To provide opportunities for participants to develop an understanding of the meaning and responsibilities of personal, organizational, and community leadership; and to produce ethical leaders committed to active community involvement.
Who Can Participate. Current sophomores from any Douglas County high school (public, private and homeschool) are eligible to apply. The Youth Leadership Douglas Program will take place during junior year.

Making Real-World Connections
WIC Outreach Coordinator, Beth Stafford, visited Mrs. Benford's Food for Life class and shared vital information to our students highlighting the importance of nutritious foods, healthy foods to supplement diets and healthy eating habits.
Virtual Reality
VR headsets come complete with everything teachers need to improve student engagement and introduce virtual reality into the classroom. Above, Mrs. Adrienne Lacour utilizes VR glasses to teach Algebra. Students were fully engaged in an exciting math lesson while having fun in the classroom.
Teacher Gifts Students with Custom-Made T-Shirts
Early Childhood Education Teacher, Ms. Anna Tolbert, gifted T-shirts to her students that were custom-made by her😍. ECE students wore their custom-made T-shirts last week as they made their weekly visit to Sweetwater ES on their quest to enhance their knowledge of child development. For Ms. Tolbert, a uniformed look sets her students apart when out in the community and not to mention the T-shirts make her students easily identifiable. Great job Ms. Tolbert!
From the Desk of Media Specialist, Keisha Jinks
“Pop In for A Good Read” Week was a smashing success! Can you believe it — a whopping 260 students checked out a book and got treated to a bag of Double Good popcorn. It was such a fantastic way to encourage young minds to explore the wonderful world of books while treating themselves to a tasty snack. I mean, who doesn't love reading while munching on some popcorn, right? The students were deeply moved by this event, and it is truly amazing to see their excitement as they explore various genres. Kudos to everyone involved in making this week such a success. Let's keep up the momentum and continue encouraging these future bookworms. Special shout out to Ms. Clemons, Ms. Crews, Ms. Washington, Mr. Cortez and Mr. Leon for bringing their class!

DCSS Students Encouraged to Speak Up for Safety
The Douglas County School System is taking a proactive approach to keeping schools and students safe. Students can now use Speak Up for Safety to report any suspicious behavior or activity in their schools anonymously, using text, email, or phone call.
“We wanted to provide our students with a way to provide discreet information when they encountered a situation where they felt either their safety or the safety of another person would be threatened,” explained Douglas County School System Chief of Police, Tracey Whaley. The simplicity of sending a text or email is one benefit of the program along with the anonymity, Whaley added.
The confidential digital tip line can be used for reporting bullying, threats of suicide, self-harm, drug or alcohol abuse, school violence, and other student safety threats. Once the call is placed, a trained 24/7 safety team member immediately evaluates all submitted communication and alerts district level emergency contacts as needed.
To report a concern, students are asked to email speakup@dcssga.org or call/text 770-525-5419.

Clear Bag Policy at All Athletic Events
DCSS has a clear bag policy at all sporting events. The policy is similar to policies in place at college and professional stadiums and coliseums.
"The clear bag policy will help us keep dangerous or illegal items, including weapons, out of our venues," said Superintendent Trent North. "By allowing only clear bags, we can monitor what's coming into our stadiums and gyms and keep everyone safer with only minor inconvenience to those in attendance."
The following types of bags will be permitted inside DCSS sporting events:
- Bags that are clear plastic, vinyl or PVC and do not exceed 12"x6"x12"
- One-gallon clear plastic freezer bags
- Small clutch bags, with or without a handle or strap, that do not exceed 4.5"x6.5"
No outside food or drink will be permitted. Bottled water will be acceptable under special circumstances. Thank you in advance for adhering to this policy.
