STUDENTS' SPOTLIGHT
DESTINY FRANCIS 🎨
Meet Destiny Francis! A talented artist and straight "A" 11th grader here at LSHS. Destiny is also the president of the National Art Honor Society. Destiny's artwork "In Honor of My Grandpas," was on display at LSHS last week during Freshman Expo. Destiny wanted to create a piece to honor the grandfathers. When asked how this vision came about, Destiny replied, " 'In Honor of My Grandpa's' is a heartfelt piece that holds a special place in my heart. It serves as a tribute to both of my grandfathers, who unfortunately passed away when I was younger. I wanted to create something that would keep their memories alive, so I made this piece as a gift for my parents, who are displayed next to pictures of their respective fathers. The background of the piece is adorned with specific flowers that are symbolic of my grandfather's roots. In the upper region, there are blue magnolia flowers, which are a nod to New Orleans, Louisiana, where my dad's father was born. The lower area is decorated with peach tree flowers, which represent Georgia, where my other grandfather was from. This piece was a laborious journey to complete, taking me roughly 4-5 months to finish, but the joy it brought to my parents seeing it for the first time made it all worthwhile." A true talent that we are proud of and wish her much success in her future endeavors.

SCHOOL NUTRITION: BREAKFAST & LUNCH
Dear Parents:
We want to remind you of the importance of completing the free and reduced meal application for your child to qualify for free and reduced meals at school. Until the application is approved, breakfast will cost $1.25 and lunch will cost $2.50 daily.
Please note, meals are not free, and parents will be required to send money for their child's meals until the application is processed and approved. We encourage you to take advantage of the option to complete the application and to load money to your child's meal account through schoolcafe.com or send cash for meals. We have many students charging lunch; however, they are not repaying. It is crucial that we work together to address this issue promptly by completing the free and reduced meal application as soon as possible, and if approved, you will be notified.
Thank you for your attention to this matter and for your cooperation in ensuring that all students have access to nutritious meals during the school day.

ATTENTION RISING 10TH & 11TH GRADERS
Dear Rising 10th & 11th Graders,
Are you a student who is looking for an opportunity to grow your leadership skills? Do you care about housing affordability, protection of greenspace, and other issues facing metro Atlanta? If so, then the region’s premier leadership program, Model Atlanta Regional Commission (MARC), is a great opportunity for you.
MARC is the only program of its kind to involve students in experiential learning in real-world areas affecting life here in metro Atlanta. For more than two decades, it has engaged young people on the latest in transportation, natural resource sustainability, and community development.
MARC participants meet once a month for six months as they take part in hands-on activities, behind-the-scenes tours, and thought-provoking discussions with local civic leaders and experts as they develop their own actionable solutions to the challenges facing us.
The 2024-2025 MARC program application is now open to rising 10th and 11th grade students who reside or attend school in the 11-county Atlanta region (Cherokee, Clayton, Cobb, DeKalb, Douglas, Fayette, Forsyth, Fulton, Gwinnett, Henry and Rockdale counties, and the City of Atlanta) and are interested in learning how they can act to make metro Atlanta an even better place to call home.
The program is free to attend. Applications are due by May 3, 2024 and space is limited.

Clear Bag Policy at All Athletic Events
DCSS has a clear bag policy at all sporting events. The policy is similar to policies in place at college and professional stadiums and coliseums.
"The clear bag policy will help us keep dangerous or illegal items, including weapons, out of our venues," said Superintendent Trent North. "By allowing only clear bags, we can monitor what's coming into our stadiums and gyms and keep everyone safer with only minor inconvenience to those in attendance."
The following types of bags will be permitted inside DCSS sporting events:
- Bags that are clear plastic, vinyl or PVC and do not exceed 12"x6"x12"
- One-gallon clear plastic freezer bags
- Small clutch bags, with or without a handle or strap, that do not exceed 4.5"x6.5"
No outside food or drink will be permitted. Bottled water will be acceptable under special circumstances. Thank you in advance for adhering to this policy.
