When the new Lithia Springs High School is built, the gymnasium at LSHS will bear the name of District 2 Board of Education Member and Board Vice Chair D.T. Jackson — a trailblazer who has served the Lithia Springs community on the Board for the past 14 years. The Board of Education and Superintendent Trent North surprised Mr. Jackson at a recent board meeting with news of the honor, along with a framed rendering of the new gymnasium with his name across the entrance.
In addition to Board members, Principal Jones and Asst. Principal Mikey Jones, Pastor Ben Lang from Cornerstone Baptist Church where Mr. Jackson attends church was also in attendance, along with several county and city officials who spoke about the impact Mr. Jackson has made on the community. When Mr. Jackson was first elected in 2010 to serve the citizens of District 2, he became the first African-American ever on the Board, blazing a trail for the others who came after him. He also served as Chair of the Board prior to current Board Chair Tracy Rookard (pictured above), making him the first African-American to hold that job. Mr. Jackson also served his country as a U.S. Marine in Vietnam.
We celebrate this honor with Mr. Jackson and thank him for all he has done for the Douglas County School System community as well as his service to our nation.
