This semester, the halls of our high school smell sweeter than ever thanks to a cross-curricular chocolate chip cookie project! Students from Dr. Hooda’s Honors Chemistry class and Mrs. Hoffman’s Food Nutrition and Wellness class have teamed up for a fun and educational collaboration that’s truly a recipe for success.
In Chemistry, students are exploring limiting agents discovering how the amount of one ingredient can determine how many cookies a batch produces. By experimenting with flour, sugar, and chocolate chips, they’re seeing how stoichiometry applies beyond the lab and into the kitchen.
Meanwhile, the Food Nutrition and Wellness students are conducting sensory evaluations, assessing each cookie’s appearance, aroma, texture, and flavor. They’re learning to describe food characteristics scientifically—skills essential in both culinary arts and food science.
“This collaboration helps students connect chemistry to real-world applications,” says Dr. Hooda. Mrs. Hoffman adds, “It’s a delicious way to reinforce precision and ingredient science—plus, who doesn’t love cookies?”
Keep an eye out for these budding scientists and bakers they may just create the next award-winning cookie recipe!
