Lithia Springs High School celebrates five STEM magnet students who won the People’s Choice Award at The Next IT Girls FashionTech Hackathon with their innovative wearable wellness device designed to support women’s safety and empowerment.
Team Athena: Savannah Brooks, Kailey “Bri” Derricott, Victoria Lee, Daniella Loh, and Maria Okwumabua — advanced as finalists with a Pandora-style wellness bracelet that blends fashion and function. Each student earned a MacBook and a luxury Saks Fifth Avenue gift bag.
“This hackathon gave our students a platform to be seen, heard, and celebrated in a field where diverse perspectives matter,” said Dr. Nicole Oliver-Wynn, STEM coordinator. “Team Athena’s success shows how creativity and STEM blend seamlessly in our magnet program.”
With support from LSHS alumnus and Accenture professional Marcus Knighton, three school teams reached the second round, building prototypes at Accenture’s offices. Team Athena competed in the final round on Dec. 4.
The school plans to replicate this experience for middle school students across Douglas County, expanding access to real-world, interdisciplinary STEM opportunities.
Congratulations, Team Athena — you’ve made LSHS proud! #GreatnessGrowsHere
